Melvin R. Carlson, M.D. - Emeritus

Dr. Carlson specializes in the evaluation, treatment and management of eye disorders and vision problems in children as well as adults with strabismus or eye alignment problems.

After completing his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Washington, Dr. Carlson under went specialty training in ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles. He advanced his training through his pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship with Dr. Arthur Jampolsky at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Science in San Francisco.

Upon his successful completion of his specialty fellowship and board certification, Dr. Carlson entered private practice in Seattle in 1978. He is an active member with many professional associations and the author of numerous publications in the field of ophthalmology and his subspecialty in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.

In addition, Dr. Carlson serves as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology with the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Carlson has been repeatedly recognized by The Best Doctors in America publication and Seattle Magazine as one of the best ophthalmologists as determined by Dr. Carlson's medical peers.

Curtis Ono, O.D.

Dr. Ono performs eye evaluations for patients in all age groups with a emphasis in the evaluation and fitting of specialty contact lenses for challenging and difficult to fit patients.

Dr. Ono attended Indiana University for both his undergraduate and graduate education. While at Indiana University, Dr. Ono served as a clinical instructor and was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa optometric honor fraternity.

After graduation and successful license certification, Dr. Ono practiced in Minnesota and Tacoma, Washington before joining Puget Sound Eye Care. Post-graduate training includes successful completion of ocular therapeutic drug certification, laser certification course and oral and injectable medication certification. In addition, Dr. Ono served as a clinical instructor to train and certify other optometric physicians in the use of oral and injectable medications.

Dr. Ono is an active member with his professional associations at the state, regional and national level. He currently serves as the Executive Chair of the Affiliate Relations and Membership Group and Chair of the Affiliate Partner Membership Committee of the American Optometric Association (AOA) and Washington State Director of the Great Western Council of Optometry (GWCO). Past leadership positions includes President of the Optometric Physicians of Washington (OPW), President of the Pierce County Optometric Society, Senior Warden at St. Peter’s Episcopal Parish, Trustee of OPW and Membership Chair of OPW.

Dr. Ono was the Founder and Chair of the Minnesota Vision Project, which provided eye examinations and spectacles patients without adequate eye care insurance coverage. He currently volunteers in many public health eye care programs including the Millionair Club Charity Eye Clinic in Seattle for homeless individuals (http://www.millionairclub.org/how-we-help), InfantSEE for infants under 12-months of age (http://www.infantsee.org/) and Vision USA (http://www.aoafoundation.org/vision-usa/) for under-insured patients. The Consumers' Research Council of America's Guide to America's Top Optometrists has recognized Dr. Ono as one of the top optometrists in America.

Matthew D. Carlson, O.D.

Dr. Carlson specializes in the evaluation, treatment and management of eye disorders and vision problems in children and adults with strabismus, amblyopia and eye alignment problems. He emphasizes pediatric care, but is open to see patients in all age groups.

Dr. Matthew Carlson completed his Bachelors of Science at Linfield College in Oregon. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University in Forest Grove. While attending Pacific University, Dr. Carlson worked as clinical lab instructor and also worked as an Ophthalmic Technician and Optician. He completed his pediatric externships at Pacific University College of Optometry and Northwest Pediatric Eye Care. Upon completion, Dr. Carlson was offered a full time position at Puget Sound Eye Care where he has worked alongside Dr. Melvin Carlson.

In addition, he is an active member of the Optometric Physicians of Washington, American Optometric Association, and the Special Olympics of Washington. He received the Tole Greenstein Award for exceptional performance in areas of binocular vision, vision therapy and pediatric vision.

In his spare time he also enjoys outdoor activities such as running, cycling, boating, and catch and release fishing.


Stephanie Ho, O.D.

Dr. Stephanie Ho is a native of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Ho completed her Bachelor of Science with First Class Honors at the University of British Columbia. After doing eye research in Canada and Spain, she received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Here, she was the recipient of the Board of Trustees Scholarship for all 4 years.

Upon graduation, Dr. Ho practiced in both Washington and British Columbia. Her broad and diverse optometric experience includes working in general ophthalmology, refractive surgery, senior care homes, Indian health service and private practice. During her training, Dr. Ho had clinical rotations at a Low Vision Clinic in Philadelphia PA, Dorn VA hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California, a vision therapy clinic in New Westminster, Colorado and helped start a private practice in Stowe,Vermont. She has since relocated to Newcastle, WA with her husband Anthony and baby Marcus where they have decided to make their home.

Dr. Ho is actively involved in her profession and the community. She is an active member of the American Optometric Association, Optometric Physicians of Washington, and King County Optometric Society. Dr. Ho is currently a member of the OPW Education Committee. She has been the Co-Chair of the OPW Membership Committee and the King County Membership Committee. She organized a team of optometrists to perform eye exams for the athletes of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Dr. Ho has been a principal investigator for Vistakon clinical studies. Also, she has volunteered her time for World Relief Seattle.


Charissa Young, O.D., F.A.A.O.

Dr. Young performs eye evaluations for patients in all age groups with an emphasis in contact lenses and eye disease.

Dr. Young grew up in Duarte, California and completed dual bachelor degrees in Journalism and French at the University of Kansas. She continued her education at Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon, graduating with her doctorate degree with Beta Sigma Kappa honors designation. She combines her passions for writing, research, and modern medicine as a contributing writer to several medical eye care journals.

Dedicated to providing patient-focused eye care, Dr. Young completed a one-year post-graduate fellowship at a specialty eye care clinic in the Seattle area and presented several research papers at national conferences. She is certified to fit a variety of contact lenses, ranging from soft to rigid gas permeable to multifocal designs.

Dr. Young is an active member of Optometric Physicians of Washington (OPW), American Optometric Association (AOA), and American Academy of Optometry (AAO). She also volunteers regularly for Seattle-area homeless organizations and leads eye care missions in rural and underserved areas of Thailand, where she has family.
