Ortho-K (Ortho-Keratology) Contact Lenses

Are you interested in freedom from glasses and daily contact lens wear but want an alternative to LASIK surgery? Are your eyes too dry for soft contact lenses? At Puget Sound Eye Care, our optometric physicians have specialty training in advanced corneal reshaping techniques, also known as Ortho-Keratology or Ortho-K. Ortho-K is FDA-approved for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness) for both kids and adults.

Corneal Reshaping While You Sleep

Ortho-K technology utilizes custom-made rigid contact lens retainers that you insert before bedtime to gently reshape your eyes while you sleep. When you wake up, you remove the lenses and can enjoy improved vision during the day. Ortho-K lenses must be worn every night to maintain your clarity of vision. If you discontinue Ortho-K, your corneas will assume their previous shape after several weeks.

Ortho-K for Myopia Control

Myopia, also known as "nearsightedness," causes the eye to grow longer and have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. The prevalence rate of myopia is increasing not only worldwide, but also in the United States, where the incidence has increased 50% in the last 20 years. There are also growing levels of high myopia, which increases the risk of serious eye conditions like glaucoma, retinal detachments, and myopia degeneration. Ortho-K is FDA-approved to correct myopia, but it is considered off-label to slow myopia progression. While Ortho-K for myopia control is not currently FDA approved, many clinical studies have shown it may slow or even stop myopia progression. Our optometric physicians can review your prescription history and examination to determine if Ortho-K or other off-label myopia control methods may be beneficial to slow the progression of your myopia.
